If you haven't seen Paranormal Activity and plan to, DO NOT watch the trailer! Gives away too much.
Really liked Paranormal Activity but it will not be for everyone. Scares come from tension and the unknown things about to happen. Very effective.
Time tracking and billing a fully manual process for us now. Absolute waste of valuable people resources!

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Just finished watching remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still." Poor reimagining of a classic. FX and preachy message is all it had going for it.
Thinking about going to see "9" today. Been interested in it since I saw the trailer months ago.

"Trust Agents," "Socialnomics," "The Whuffie Factor," "Six Pixels of Seperation" - so many books on social media for biz that I need to read NOW.
Just realized that "Twitterville" by @shelisrael has been released. Ordering in progress... Expect it to be right up there with "Naked Conversations."
I'm looking forward to reading Gordon Bell's "Total Recall." The ideas are very intriguing.

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Watching a very interesting film about Hurricane Katrina, "Trouble the Water."
Amazon App also doesn't support digital downloads. Drat! Would be cool to order Kindle books or download MP3s right to the BB.
Amazon App for BlackBerry doesn't seem to know when you're adding something that is already in your Wish List. Says it added the item.
Just installed the Amazon App for BlackBerry. Very nice. The Remembers feature could be very handy.
I didn't know that Errol Morris directed Apple's 2002 "Switchers" ads. I can see his style in them for sure.
Note to self - improve skill with spray paint before trying any more small home projects. Most importantly, know when *not* to use spray paint.
IM+ on BlackBerry doesn't seem to work with Live acct with MS OCS buddies. It keeps trying to authorize them but they never show in my list.
Just tried to watch youtube.com/html5 in Google Chrome but was told I need an HTML 5 capable browser. C'mon Google!

Saturday, August 29, 2009

TWiT #192 has redeemed the show. Good conversations among people who respect each others' time to speak.
Giving TWiT #192 a chance. 10 minutes to keep me from writing off the whole show.
Just listened to the first 15 minutes of TWiT #191. What a train wreck.
On the road again. 3+ hours of driving ahead of me.

I have a lot to back up (200GB), so Carbonite wins on price. But it won't back up external or network drives - not good.
Any recommendations for online backup providers? I'm currently looking at Carbonite and Jungle Disk.
Just switched Gmail to always use https and Offline broke. Ended up reinstalling. Cache appears to be stored by port in Gears.

It's official - I'm moving on from Boston at the end of May.

Watchmen - I'm not familiar with the source material, so maybe I'm missing something. Verdict = Boring and silly.
In the end, I should have skipped TLHotL and rewatched Bergman's "The Virgin Spring".
Make that a silly, "Hollywood-ized" ending...
Remake of The Last House on the Left - better than original, poor ending.

Roku + Amazon is so easy, I now have access to video that I forgot buying! :-)
Just connected my Roku with Amazon. So easy to rent and buy video - and never store another piece of physical media.

Switching to a different carrier will cost me an early term fee of $250, but right now it feels worth it.
AT&T sucks - I have a broken mobile, but I'm not "eligible for an upgrade" yet. iPhone 16 GB = $499. BlackBerry Bold = $549.

Slumdog Millionaire wins Best Picture. Of course it did! Wins in 8 out of 9 nominated categories.
Props to Sean Penn for calling out Mickey Rourke during his acceptance speech.
MICKEY ROURKE WAS ROBBED!!!! Sean Penn wins Best Actor for Milk. A great performance, but MICKEY ROURKE WAS ROBBED!!!!
Kate Winslet wins Best Actress for The Reader. Well deserved, and about time she won for something.
I think Sophia Loren was done by the same visual effects artists that worked on Benjamin Button...
Slumdog has won in every category it was nominated except Sound Editing. 7 total wins tonight. Make that 8 when it wins Best Picture.
Danny Boyle wins Achievement in Directing for Slumdog Millionaire. Was there any doubt?
Personally, Waltz With Bashir didn't resonate with me. Interesting vision, but I think it's overrated. The Class is a much better film.
Wow - Departures wins Best Foreign Language Film of the Year over Waltz With Bashir AND The Class? Surprising...!
"Jai Ho" (Slumdog Millionaire) wins Original Song. Definitely agree - great song. Who can resist the big Bollywood ending? :-)
Slumdog wins another one - Original Score.
Slumdog Millionaire wins for Achievement in Film Editing. Absolutely agree. We'll be seeing more of this film tonight! :-)
Achievement in Sound Mixing goes to Slumdog Millionaire - that one surprised me!
The Dark Knight wins for Achievement in Sound Editing. I would have given it to WALL-E - so much of that film was just sound effects.
Achievement in Visual Effects goes to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Absolutely agree - it was amazing in that respect.
P.S. Alan Arkin - his name is Philip Seymour Hoffman. :-)
Smile Pinki for Best Documentary Short Subject. Didn't see any of these, but now I know where to start...
Best Documentary Feature win for Man on Wire. Absolutely agree, but Trouble The Water needs to be seen by more people.
Heath Ledger wins for Best Supporting Actor. No surprise there, and well deserved. R.I.P.
Spielzeugland (Toyland) wins Best Live Action Short Film. Not the best IMO, but a can't-miss for a win.
Slumdog Millionaire for Achievement in Cinematography. I thought The Dark Knight would grab this one - it was the best shot film IMO.
Achievement in Makeup goes to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - another given.
Costume Design - The Duchess. Pretty much a given - period pieces are favorites for this category.
Art Direction - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. That one was a toss-up, but I picked it right!
Best Animated Short Film - La Maison En Petits Cubes. Good film, but I figured Pixar would sweep both categories. Oh well...
WALL-E wins Best Animated Feature Film of the Year. Easy to call that one - no dark horse in that race!
Win #1 (of many...) for Slumdog Millionaire - Adapted Screenplay.
No surprise on Original Screenplay - Milk.
Can't argue with Penelope Cruz winning Best Supporting Actress, but I would've given it to Viola Davis.
Oscars time!!!
Going to see "Waltz With Bashir" and "The Class".

There's something very liberating about knowing that you have no problem firing a problem customer.
Amazon's Kindle 3 should be a partnership with Sony. Amazon handles the service, Sony handles the hardware. The perfect eBook reader.
I'm not sure what my expectations were of Amazon's Kindle 2, but I know that what was released didn't come close to meeting them.

And Mickey Rourke... astounding performance. Easily the best work he's even done. I may even call it one of the best performances *ever*.
With The Wrestler, Darren Aronofsky wins back all of the points he lost with last year's The Fountain.
The Reader and Revolutionary Road were both very good, but The Wrestler was outstanding!
